My name is Vince Felder. I am currently Monroe County Legislature of the 22nd District. I am a graduate of SUNY Brockport, with a degree in Political Science. I am a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. I would like to continue the tradition of strong leadership in the 22nd Legislative District, building on the legacies of David Gantt, Ron Thomas and Glenn Gamble.
The 22nd District is the poorest district in the city of Rochester, plagued by high levels of violent crime, unemployment and vacant/abandoned houses. While the Public Market, the Eastman School of Music, the High Falls Brewing Co., the Strong Museum of Play, Rochester Gas and Electric, Channel 10, the Little Theatre, the Grove Place neighborhood and part of East Avenue are in the District, 47% of the residents of the 14605 zip code live in poverty. The unemployment rate in 14605 is 19%.
We must not only address the causes of poverty, but we must also focus on the negative effects of poverty: Crime, unemployment, substandard housing, education, etc. I also believe that Monroe County must ensure that affordable child care is available to every family who needs it. I believe that more must be done to attract businesses to my district in order to create jobs for the residents of the district. A 19% unemployment rate is unacceptable. And residents need to feel safe in their homes.
I believe that Monroe County has not been engaged enough in helping to combat poverty in the city of Rochester, and it is time for leadership that will begin to move the County government in that direction. I will focus on three key areas:
Affordable and Accessible Child Care
I promise to fight to make Monroe County Government responsive to the needs of all residents, regardless of Zip Code. This community has a lot of challenges, but working together, we will turn things around.
